5 Fun Science Experiments For Kids

kids

Density.  Polymers.  a magnetic field.  No, we’re not creating a science curriculum for high school!  The experiments that follow demonstrate a few scientific ideas.  These simple, highly regarded children’s science experiments are open to all participants.  You might be dealing with a future scientist!

1. SUPERSIZE A MARSHMALLOW

kids3

Is it possible to SUPERSIZE a marshmallow?  Indeed, you can!

A microwave and a marshmallow are required.

How to supersize a marshmallow step-by-step:

 1. Ask an adult to microwave a large marshmallow for 30 to 60 seconds after placing it on a dish.

 2. You’ll notice that it keeps growing before turning dark within.

Because marshmallows contain a large number of microscopic air pockets, they are frothy.  The water vapour inside them is heated by the microwaves, which causes the molecules to bounce around more and more and force the air pockets outward.  However, the sugar ultimately begins to burn, which means that after just 30 seconds, they will taste better.  When they come out, they’re really hot, so watch out!

2. MAKE DRAGON EGGS:

Have you ever attempted creating dragon eggs with magic?  Take advantage of your buddies, then devour them!

You’ll need food colouring and eggs.

Detailed instructions for creating dragon eggs:

 1. Request that an adult hard-boil some eggs.

 2. Roll them on the work surface to crackle the shell all over after letting them cool.

 3. Fill some glasses halfway with water, then add a generous amount of food colouring (gel pastes work best).

 4. Fill each cup with an egg and refrigerate overnight.

 5. When you remove the shell, you’ll notice that the colour has been absorbed everywhere the shell has broken.

 6. Now devour them!

3. MAKE EDIBLE POO:

kids5

Are you prepared to manufacture fake poop?  Oh no, it’s both tasty and awful!

You’ll need biscuits, chocolate, and raisins.

Detailed instructions for creating tasty poop:

 1. Pour the syrup over the broken chocolate in the bowl.

 2. Crush the biscuits finely.

 3. Have an adult heat the chocolate in the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds.

 4. Stir in the raisins and biscuit crumbs.

 5. Add more syrup or microwave for an additional 10 seconds if the mixture is too dry.

 6. Roll the mixture into two or three sausage shapes once it’s cool enough to handle.

You should find it looks just like real poo! Tell everyone it’s poo… and then eat it! It’s poo-a-licious!

4. SPOOKY HALLOWEEN EXPERIMENT:

kids6

You will need: 2 chicken bones (legs are ideal), jar with a lid (large enough to hold one bone with space at the top), vinegar, clingfilm

Step-by-step guide to making a real bone bendy:

1. Remove all the meat from both bones and wash and dry them carefully.

2. Gently try to bend both bones.

3. Place one bone in the jar, cover with vinegar and replace the lid.

4. Wrap the other bone in cling film and leave for three days.

5. For best results, change the vinegar in the jar after three days and then leave the experiment for another two days.

5. MAKE AND TEST STRAW PLANES:

Is a triangle able to fly?  Try it out!

You’ll need tape, two strips of paper, and a paper straw.

Detailed instructions for creating a flying triangle:

 1. Cut out a 2.5 x 20 cm piece of paper.

 2. Cut out a second 2.5 x 12 cm piece of paper.

 3. Use sticky tape to bind the longer strip after folding it into an equal-sided triangle.

 4. Using the shorter strip, form a circle and tape it in place.

 5. Attach the triangle and circle to the straw’s ends, respectively.

 6. You can now launch your flying machine.

Try making more straw planes in various shapes by varying the length of the straw or the shape of the smaller loop.  Like a true scientist, don’t forget to document your findings and adjust one variable at a time!
